This year’s feature conference is the inaugural Brainstorm Design. This event, from 6 to 8 March, is organised by Time Inc., on a three-year partnership with Dsg, with support from the Economic Development Board (EDB). Led by the editorial teams of TIME, Fortune and Wallpaper*, Brainstorm Design will bring together global thought leaders in the business, public policy, and design communities to discuss how design can help build businesses, improve sustainability, engage communities and enrich people’s lives. Brainstorm Design is expected to attract more than 200 leading international design talents, as well as C-suite executives, including chief design officers, design practitioners, Fortune 500 senior executives, government leaders, decision makers in private and public sectors, and advocates of design thinking. You will hear from more than 50 speakers including Airbnb Co-founder and Chief Product Officer Joe Gebbia as well as Heatherwick Studio Founder and Design Director Thomas Heatherwick. - SDW will once again be anchored by SingaPlural 2018: bringing creatives, including Rx co-lab and brands such as Ewins, Formica and Kvadrat to explore the concept of play as an important experimental process that precedes design work. The showcase is curated by design studio Produce, which recently won the INSIDE World Interior of the Year 2017 award at the World Architecture Festival.
- Wallpaper* magazine’s iconic Handmade 2018 exhibition: For the 2018 edition, Wallpaper* has invited young Singaporean designers to submit their concepts for an open call for the Next Generation Designer in July 2017; the winner will be announced soon. Six established Singapore-based designers have also been commissioned for the show. The seven Singapore pieces will debut at the new Red Dot Design Museum from 8 March, before being exhibited in Milan in April during the Milan Design Week.
- SDW’s long-standing trade show, the International Furniture Fair Singapore (IFFS): For the first time, the trade show will partner Chantal Hamaide, founder and chief editor of French design magazine Intramuros to design the focal point of IFFS – the Piazza. Expect an exclusively-styled pop-up showroom showcasing internationally-renowned and up-and-coming brands in the global furniture, lighting, homeware and lifestyle accessories markets.
- On a community level, Dsg is partnering government agencies and local creative businesses: National Heritage Board (NHB), HJGHER and LOPELAB, will enliven the Bras Basah. Bugis, Holland Village and Tanjong Pagar precincts respectively, through District Activations. The Design X Heritage trailswill include guided tours of places with architectural and heritage value, and specially curated self-guided trails.
