CITIES & DESIGN 2019 CALL

Posted on: 6. June 2019

The Bilbao Bizkaia Design Week (BBDW) is an annual event revolving around design, creative industries and innovation. It aims to promote design and the creative industries as a factor of economic development and international projection of the Bizkaia region. It is organised by the Provincial Council of Bizkaia and Bilbao City Council through the Bilbao Bizkaia Design Council (BiDC), which this year takes place from 14 to 21 November 2019.

During the BBDW, a number of stakeholders in the sector and entities from Bizkaia have put together a schedule of activities which, thanks to the quality and number, has created an interesting agenda for professionals, businesses and the general public: conferences, exhibitions, workshops, festivals, meetings, etc.

FUTURE US! Design driven futures is the theme for this edition and the conceptual framework for this call. It seeks creative professionals for the construction of new chronicles to enrich the discussions about the challenges posed by economic and cultural globalisation, the environmental crisis, new technologies and the growing competitiveness between cities to attract economic investment and talent.

We live in a world in which overestimation of the ephemeral, the immediate, places us under great adaptive pressure. Addressing the current situation requires firm interweaving of creative knowledge in the design process of new narratives which serve as a base for the development of solutions that provide an answer to the complexity of a hyperconnected world.

Purpose

In its fifth edition, the BBDW seeks the participation of professionals and initiatives from the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, which, in a collaborative manner, create and prototype future scenarios offering an answer to the challenges facing our cities, in line with the theme proposed for this edition.

The purpose, therefore, of this call is to form an international team which uses the tools and methodologies of design to propose solutions. These may be presented and exhibited at the Cities&Design 2019 conference organised by BiDC as part of the BBDW19 agenda, held in Bilbao from 14 November 2019.

This team will consist of a professional or business from Bizkaia and two professionals or businesses from one of the UNESCO Cities of Design.
