The University of Graz is excited to announce a unique research and design initiative centered around a valuable collection of liturgical manuscripts from the 12th and 13th centuries. Donated to the University in 1782, these manuscripts are adorned with beautiful silk stitch patterns that represent the exquisite craftsmanship of their time.

We invite designers, institutions, and universities from the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) to join us in exploring these historical patterns and promoting their use in modern design prototypes. The aim of this initiative is to combine old craftsmanship with contemporary design to develop innovative solutions.

Project Objectives

  • Integrate historical patterns into contemporary designs: Explore the methods by which these books were sewn and consider their application in modern design and clothing repair.
  • Collaborate across disciplines: Bring together scientific research and creative expertise to develop new applications and integrate historical patterns into modern design.

Project Phases

Phase 1: Initial Engagement and Information Sharing

  • Information Workshop: Host a workshop for designers.
  • University Presentation: Conduct a presentation/lecture by the University of Graz, including a viewing of the manuscripts in the library.

Phase 2: Design and Development

  • Design Phase: Designers will create contemporary design drafts inspired by the historical patterns.
  • Presentation and Reflection: Present and reflect on the drafts.
  • Prototype Development: Develop the design prototypes.
  • Final Presentation: Showcase the prototypes during Design Month 2025 in an exhibition.

How to Participate

Designers, institutions, and universities interested in participating are encouraged to contact us for more information and to express their interest. This collaboration offers a unique opportunity to fuse historical craftsmanship with modern design, pushing the boundaries of both fields.
