Stitching the centuries

designing the seams. sewing the cities

In 1782, the University of Graz was gifted a valuable collection of liturgical manuscripts from the Seckau Abbey following the dissolution of the monasteries. These books, dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries, feature some of the finest silk embroidery patterns of their time. In collaboration with Creative Industries Styria (CIS), we aim to utilize these historic patterns and promote their application in modern design prototypes. Our goal is to blend ancient craftsmanship with contemporary design to develop innovative solutions.

The stitching techniques used in these books have inspired considerations for advancing such methods for modern applications, such as clothing repair. The collaboration between the University of Graz and CIS brings together scientific research and creative expertise to integrate historical patterns into contemporary designs and develop new prototypes.
