aims to enhance the city's urban environment through innovative design and sustainable development.
Project
The Urban Commission in Dubai aims to enhance the city’s urban environment through innovative design and sustainable development. By fostering collaboration among architects, planners, and stakeholders, it addresses urbanization challenges and promotes vibrant, inclusive public spaces. The annual Urban Commissions competition invites designers to create outdoor furniture with a responsible approach, focusing on community engagement. The 2024 theme, ‘Tawila’ (meaning ‘table’ in Arabic), symbolizes human interaction, fostering dialogue and creativity. This year’s winner, Altqadum, a research-based design studio from Oman, created TukTuKDum, an interactive table inspired by Gulf musical culture, inviting community participation. By emphasizing sustainable solutions, the commission seeks to balance economic growth with environmental responsibility, meeting the needs of current and future generations while reflecting the city’s cultural identity.
Mission
The Urban Commission succeeds by fostering collaboration among diverse stakeholders in urban planning. It prioritizes public engagement through community consultations and feedback initiatives. Its focus on sustainable design and inclusive public spaces enhances livability, while innovative projects reflect Dubai’s cultural identity and address urban challenges effectively.
