The cities of the world gather in Seoul to explore the present and future of urban civilization. How are we going to share breathable air, drinking water land and energy for living and manufacturing?
Under environmental crisis and social injustice, we propose the urban vision of sharing and manufacturing over possession and consumption.
The Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism 2017 is an experimental platform for an imminent urbanism that goes beyond human-centered functions, ownership, and consumption to a commons of, technologies, resources and production. They propose nine essential commons as a feasible path towards a sustainable and just urbanism. From both ecological and technological problems, this frame foregrounds a study not of a distant utopia but of the near future.
The four ecology commons are air, water, fire and earth. The five technology commons are making, moving, communicating, sensing and recycling.
Based on the theme of “Imminent Commons,” the Seoul Biennale will be held from September 2 to November 5. The exhibition will be organized into two major sections, “Thematic Exhibition” and “Cities Exhibition ” and other various programs such as international studio, educational programs, forums, tour programs and common library will also be prepared.
