Covilhã Creative Week #CCW

08 - 14 Nov 2022

The first Covilhã Creative Week #CCW will take place between the 8th and 14th of November 2022, featuring a diverse program that encompasses free and simultaneous cultural activities for the community. This event takes place under the scope of Covilhã, City of Design‘s Action Plan, and embodies a milestone in the cultural program scheduled for the second half of 2022.

Covilhã Creative Week will start on November 8th, established as Municipal Culture Day, marking the first anniversary of Covilhã’s designation as a UNESCO Creative City in Design.

During the week, two artistic installations will be revealed to the public, evoking the relationship between Debuxo and contemporary Textile Design: both of them present an innovative proposal of a “Râmola de Sol”, an historical structure inseparable of the essence our Factory-City. These artpieces resulted from creativity residencies that occurred in Covilhã over the past weeks, under the theme “Râmolas de Sol: From Debuxo to Pixel”. The residences were operated by students from Campos Melo Secondary School and CISMA (Cultural Association) and coordinated by Ruben Marques Pedro, a Communication and Product Designer and Senior Design Consultant at the Museu of Caramulo/ Caramulo Experience Center.

The opening session of Covilhã Creative Week will take place in Salão Nobre dos Paços do Concelho, followed by the opening of the exhibition “Factory: Yesterday and Today”. This exhibition, curated by Professor Elisa Calado Pinheiro, will take place in an old factory building with free admission for the entire population. Enriching the program, there will also take place the opening of the group exhibition “Otherworlds” at the António Lopes Gallery, as well as an afternoon dedicated to conferences and debates on the contemporary challenges for Art, Culture, and Creativity.

The municipal cultural structures will also offer, on the same day, a diverse range of parallel activities. Covilhã’s Municipal Theater of Covilhã will host the closing of Municipal Culture Day with the music concert «Estórias a Quatro Mãos».

On the 9th, 10th, and 11th of November, the INDUSTRIAL will take place. Its 3rd edition goes under the theme “Designs for the City” and will feature daily sessions, complemented by guided visits to cultural institutions and creative structures in the territory. The sessions and debates will feature the participation of important names and national entities in material and intangible industrial heritage, as well as projects for sharing good practices, dissemination, and innovation in research.

The Creative Week will also include a public forum on November 12th, dedicated to Culture and Accessibility. This forum represents the Municipality’s desire to aspire to a more accessible and inclusive city for its residents and visitors. Covilhã’s Municipal Theater will mark the day with a concert by internationally renowned musician and songwriter, Rodrigo Leão.

The book “Covilhã Industrial e Universitária” will also be presented at the Salão Nobre dos Paços do Concelho on November 13th, and the Creative Week will close on November 14th, with the presence of the portuguese Minister for Culture, Pedro Adão e Silva.

The #CCW final programme, which may be subject to minor changes, includes the following roll of simultaneous activities:

  • Conferences
  • Artistic Residences
  • Music Concerts
  • Guided visits
  • Cultural Routes
  • Exhibitions
