Selected – an Exhibition on Product and Interior Design

30 Apr - 29 May 2016

A line-up of contemporary top design: the biggest design exhibition in the field of product and interior design, collected under the title ‘Walk the Line’, almost 50 top-class works from all over Europe as well as Japan and the US, for one month at designHalle Graz.

The exhibition ‘SELECTED 2016’ presents interior design trends of 47 labels from 15 nations at designHalle/ Lazarettguertel, covering an area of more than one thousand square meters. Among the 47 studios – most of them extensively discussed and highly awarded – there are for the first time also representatives from Japan and the USA. The linking element of this year is the straightness of creations that are very much against the grain.

Among the exhibits of the show there are objects – like the one of Berlin-based Sebastian Scherer of Studio Neo/Craft, winner of the German Design Award 2016. His glass table Isom, with a hexagonal top, follows strict geometrical lines and delights with a fascinating optical illusion. Exceptional straightness is also an essential characteristic of Kristina Dam’s work. Both, the plain shelves as well as the three-legged oak stool ‘Sculptural Chair’ of the Danish studio stand for plain and pure design art. Scandinavian simplicity at its best! There is also a broad range of luminaires that follows that trend. The spectacular ‘Pipe Lamps’ of well-known Austrian designer Thomas Feichtner shine due to their simple refinement. The luminaire ‘Alphabeta’ of the prestigious Italian label Studio Nichetto is just as remarkable. The colorful striking luminaires that are still minimalistic as far as style is concerned, are contemporary interpretations of historic models from the 1950s.

The sofa concepts of Dutch label Tijs Gurten remind of styles such as Bauhaus and Memphis. Diverse geometric shapes are being joined and tied down with belts in order to form different sofa combinations. Another highlight of this year’s design exhibition: Sam Linders’ ‘Wobble-Up’. The objects of the Dutch designer waltz through the balancing act of being artful carpets and a seating furniture. There will also be an interesting shelf from East-Styria that impresses with simple geometric shapes; it is by co-creation of Proedl carpentry and designer Franz Polzhofer.

The curator of ‘SELECTED 2016’ is Alexa Holzer, who – regarding the implementation of this year’s exhibition concept – cooperates with Georg Schnitzer and Peter Umgeher of Studio ‘Vandasye’.

designWORKSHOP:
Mesh (up)on!
May 28, 2016, 13.00 – 18.00
Many people know Mesh-Banner, a material with a textural grid structure, from advertisements on building facades. In this workshop the very stable mesh material is being upcycled into suspended luminaires. According to the motto ‘Build your own luminaire!’, used banners (e.g. the Selected’15 banner) are processed into lamp models. Due to the printing, every luminaire will be unique.
Contribution towards expenses: € 20. Limited number of participants.
