Under the banner of “Lusophony” and multiculturalism with special emphasis on heritage and sustainability, which are envisioned as anchors of the Municipality’s cultural programming in 2023 as well as a transversal idea to the Covilhã Action Plan as a UNESCO Creative City in Design, the event showed the possibilities of co-creation and relationships with Portuguese-speaking African nations and had the High Sponsorship of the President of the Portuguese Republic.
African designers, models, chefs, artists, and authors showcased their works as part of a community-wide, free event.
The collaboration between the municipality and the Mozambican organizations QuaQua Design and AKINO, in association with the University of the Beira Interior (UBI), made the event possible.
The Portuguese Curators Cristina Vieira and Madalena Pereira were responsible for the initiatives in the areas of fashion design, gastronomy, literature, craftwork, music, sculpture and other arts.
The week’s events, which include the exhibition, literary discussions, talks on design and sustainability, and gastronomic tastings, begin on May 23rd at the Banco de Portugal Building.
The Sustainable Fashion Show, held on May 24th at the Covilhã Municipal Theatre, was designed as a demonstration featuring collections from numerous designers from Portuguese-speaking African nations who live in and outside of Portugal. This display of the fashion collections was combined with musical performances by EPABI and recitations of African poetry by ASTA and university lecturers.
