Montreal, Canada, has announced its first dedicated design week, which will feature a trade show, a conference, and events across galleries and studios throughout the city.
The initiative coincides with the 20th anniversary of Montreal being recognised as a UNESCO City of Design. Scheduled for late April, the new event aims to bring together several existing design fairs and activities under a single platform.
At the centre of the programme will be the long-running Index-Design Show, a trade fair traditionally held at the Grand Quay at the Port of Montreal. As part of the new format, the event will expand beyond the venue to involve designers and architecture studios across the city.
Montreal Design Week is organised by Archi-Design QC and presented by surfaces company Tafisa Canada, with support from brands, museums, and public institutions. The city is backing the initiative as a way to strengthen the cultural and international presence of its design sector.
The event is expected to run for ten days in late April, between the design weeks held in Milan and New York. More than 50 venues across Montreal are planned to host exhibitions, talks, and other activities.
