1st student cohort completes Design Thinking programmes at the new HPI d-school building home to the Hasso Plattner d-school Afrika at UCT.

The Hasso Plattner Institute’s (HPI) d-school (design school) building, funded by the Hasso Plattner Foundation, was officially opened by Prof Dr. Hasso Plattner and Mamokghethi Phakeng, UCT’s vice chancellor on 13 October 2022.

The Hasso Plattner d-school Afrika’s mission is to empower as many students in Africa with the mindset of Design-led thinking, therefore empowering their competitiveness in the job market.

Since moving into their new location, the HPI d-school building is no traditional academic building, as it features large open-plan flat spaces to accommodate the teaching and working methods at the d-school, where flexible teaching spaces, flexible studios and collaborative spaces are needed.

The d-school has since had their first cohort of students complete design thinking courses in the new premises. Graduates completed the flagship programme, the Foundation Programme in Design Thinking, the most in-depth programme which has been running since 2016. The d-school wrapped things up with their last student programme of the year, Design Thinking Week, where students joined them for a fast and impactful 4-day immersion for the Design Thinking Week and wrapped up the year with a celebration party.

Students who complete d-school programmes are introduced to key mindsets and problem-solving methodologies of design thinking as they learn how to develop innovative human-centred solutions in agile, multidisciplinary teams.
